The Chinese gender chart is a tradition, not a test. Checks against real births find it's right about half the time, the same as a coin flip. To find out for real, ask about a blood test from around 10 weeks or your 18 to 22 week ultrasound.

What is the Chinese gender predictor?

The Chinese gender predictor is a traditional chart that guesses a baby's sex from the mother's lunar age and the lunar month of conception. It's a fun custom that families have shared for generations, and not a medical test. Think of it as a party game with a long history.

Everyone wants a peek at the surprise, and the chart gives you a playful one. Tell friends and family your result, make a bet, and see who's right at your ultrasound. Just keep it light. The chart can't see what's happening inside your pregnancy.

How the Chinese gender chart works

  1. Find your lunar age. In the Chinese system you're 1 at birth, and your age goes up at the Lunar New Year. Your lunar age at conception is usually one or two years more than your regular age.
  2. Find the lunar month of conception. Lunar months run from new moon to new moon, so they don't line up with calendar months. We convert your date for you.
  3. Look up the chart. Find your lunar age down the side and your lunar month across the top. The cell says boy or girl.

Our tool uses your browser's built-in Chinese calendar to convert dates, then reads the chart. Charts cover mothers aged 18 to 45 in lunar age. If you land in a leap month, we use the matching month number.

How accurate is it?

The chart has no scientific backing. A baby's sex is decided at conception by whether the sperm carries an X or a Y chromosome, and nothing about the mother's age or the lunar month changes that. When people test the chart against real births, it matches about half the time, which is what a coin flip gives you.

Ways to find out for real

Method When What to know
Blood test (NIPT) From about 10 weeks A screening test that can also reveal sex. Your provider offers it for medical reasons.
Anatomy ultrasound Weeks 18 to 22 Often shows sex, if baby is in a good position.
Diagnostic tests Varies Used only when there's a medical reason, such as CVS or amniocentesis.

When to use the chart vs when to ask your provider

Use the chart for

  • A fun guess at a baby shower or with family
  • Starting a friendly bet before your scan
  • Passing the time while you wait

Ask your provider about

  • Knowing your baby's sex for certain
  • Any decision about your care or your pregnancy
  • Which prenatal tests are right for you

What matters more than a guess: your real dates

Boy or girl, your baby needs the same things from you: a plan for feeding and a calendar you can trust. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health plans cover a breast pump, and most Hygeia moms pay $0 out of pocket. Most plans let you order 30 to 60 days before your due date. Our insurance coverage page explains how it works.

Chinese gender predictor FAQ

How does the Chinese gender predictor work?

It uses your lunar age at conception and the lunar month you conceived in. You find that pair on a traditional chart, and the cell says boy or girl. It's a custom, not a scientific method.

How accurate is the Chinese gender chart?

It's right about half the time, the same as guessing. A baby's sex depends on the sperm's chromosome at conception, and the chart can't know that. Treat the result as a game.

What is lunar age?

Lunar age counts you as 1 at birth and adds a year at each Lunar New Year. That means your lunar age is usually one or two years higher than your regular age. We calculate it for you from your birth date.

What if I don't know my conception date?

Switch to the Due date tab and enter the date your provider gave you, or use the Last period tab. We estimate conception at 266 days before your due date, or about 14 days after your last period. The result is approximate.

What happens in a leap month?

Some Chinese calendar years add an extra month. If your date falls in a leap month, we use the matching regular month number. Charts differ slightly on this, so the result is another reason to take it lightly.

Can the chart predict twins?

No. The chart gives one boy or girl result per conception month and age. If you're expecting twins, your ultrasound is the way to learn more about each baby.

When can I find out my baby's sex for real?

A prenatal blood test can reveal sex from around 10 weeks, if your provider offers it for medical reasons. Most people find out at the 18 to 22 week anatomy ultrasound. Ask your provider which option fits your care.

When should I order my breast pump?

Most insurance plans let you order 30 to 60 days before your due date. Starting early leaves time for the prescription and delivery. Check your eligibility on our insurance form, which takes about 2 minutes.
